THE BEST CRAFT RUMS ACCORDING TO THE AMERICAN DISTILLING INSTITUTE

Forbes magazine recently wrote an excellent article titled “The Best Craft Rums According To The American Distilling Institute.” In this article, our own NJoy Spirits Distillery’s own Mermaid Rum, a multi-year Gold Medal Winner, was featured in the 9th, 10th, and 11th paragraphs of the article:

“The third Best in Class winner was NJoy Spirits Distillery, Florida Mermaid Rum, 50% ABV, 750 ml, $40. This is a Florida sugar cane juice-based rum that has been blended with Caribbean pot still rums. The blended rum is then aged for 90 days in casks that previously held the distillery’s award-winning Wild Buck Whiskey.”

“On the nose, there is an intense note of overripe/cooked banana followed by floral aromas and creamy butter. As the rum opens up, additional tropical fruit notes emerge, (along with) almond, vanilla, and caramel accompanied by some seasoned oak notes. Aromatically, this rum shows a powerful Jamaican-style influence.”

“On the palate, there are more fruit notes, along with cinnamon and a bit of clove and some browned butter. The finish is long, with notes of creamy browned butter and tropical spices.”

Here are a few more key excerpts we feel you may find interesting:

“Each spring, the American Distilling Institute’s (ADI) conducts a Judging of Craft Spirits. The competition recognizes the top craft spirits in the US and around the world.”

“Since 2007, the competition has brought together approximately 50 spirit judges to evaluate submissions from small and medium-sized producers. Both members of ADI and non-members can submit entries.”

“In addition to the usual listing of Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Double Gold, the ADI’s craft spirit judging also recognizes the Best of Category and Best of Class. These are the top entrants among the Gold Medal winners.”

“Rum was the world’s first truly global spirits. Today rum is produced all over the world and has proven popular among craft spirit producers. (There were) Three rums that were chosen as Best of Class winners.”

“Craft rums are the cutting edge of contemporary rum innovation. These rums are very reasonably priced but can be hard to find. Many are only available on a regional basis or directly from the distillery. If you are a fan of rum and want to explore new and interesting rum expressions, these rums are well worth seeking out. Remember, half the fun is in the search; the other half is in drinking them.”

This Forbes magazine article was written by world-renowned spirits contributor Joseph V Micallef. In his About Page, “I have been writing and speaking about wines and spirits for 20 years. Along the way, I became a winemaker, Oregon Pinot Noir; a judge for various international competitions, among them the Irish Whisky Awards and the International Wine and Spirits Competition; wrote a book on Scotch Whisky: Its History, Production and Appreciation and working on one on Tequila. I also earned the Diploma in Wines and Spirits from the WSET.”

“(I) Have tasted a lot of wines and spirits, from 200-year-old ports to centuries-old Cognacs to many of the world’s oldest whiskies. I also write about the dusty, forgotten places of the world, the ones that reek of history and whose stories still resonate in the 21st century. The rest of the time, I cover international politics. An eclectic combination to be sure, then again, the state of the world would drive anyone to drink.”
